History

1958

The Mount Desert Campground was conceived and created by Marie and Arnold Allen in 1958. The Allen's goal was to maintain a quiet and clean tenting campground where families could come to relax, enjoy the natural beauty and make memories. For the next 25 years, the Allens enjoyed a very loyal following of campers who returned here year after year

In early 1984, the Allens sold the campground to one of those long-time campers of almost 20 years, the Craigheads. Now, all these years later, we Craigheads strive to maintain the very best campground we can - so the children of those long-time campers from years past can, in turn, make new memories with their kids.

  • This was THE best campground we have ever stayed in!! The sites are large and we never felt "cramped" even though we did have neighbors. The "Gathering Place" has free Wi-Fi and serves treats from local bakeries every morning.

  • This campground is awesome. It's better than the National Park sites. There are a lot of great sites on the water. There are a lot of great wooded sites. The bathrooms are modern. The water taps are plentiful. The views of the water sublime. It's one of the better campgrounds I've seen that I can drive into.

  • Clean bathrooms and showers. Quiet. Spacious and private sites. Platforms are wonderful. The gathering place was great for wifi accessibility. The staff was very helpful. Close to Acadia. Awesome campground

  • What a great experience camping at Mount Desert Campground proved to be. The sites are top notch as are the facilities and the entire staff. My area was maintained primarily by Mathew Orr. He, his wife and boys were all tremendous hosts, ambassadors and neighbors. By chance, the parking spot for my site was next to Mathew's family's site. The joy they took both in their own camping experience and witnessing the equal joy of us fellow campers was evident. Mathew's ability to make us all feel so welcome, while providing great care for the property and facilities was seamless. I can't thank him enough.

  • Beautiful site (even though it was not waterfront - if you have that option, grab one!)! Facilities were super clean. The Gathering Place (the camp store) was a great place to start the day for coffee, local bakery goodies and wi-fi. The floats provided wonderful water access on the sound. Kayak reveal (at camp office) was a great deal and the seals, osprey and bald eagle's nest we saw on our kayaking was awesome. The kiddo loved the water and crabs and snails. A great place to camp! Highly recommend!

  • Camped here for 5 days in early July. What a great location. Very convenient to whole island and all it has to offer. Campground is well maintained but rustic. We used bathhouse C which was fairly new and well cared for. There are pay showers, but very reasonable and worth the hot water. Kids will love crabbing in sound on the docks. We rented kayaks one morning, saw over 5 harbor seals and nest of bald eagles really close, go during high tides, as there is over 10 ft difference in tides and will be more of a challenge during low tide. The Gathering place has the only wifi on the property, but also has great ice cream in the evenings and local pastries/doughnuts in the mornings. Campground is mainly for tents and RVs under 20 ft and would get ice at market less than a mile away, as they have block and large bags. Firewood is cheaper at roadside places on the island verse the campground by a couple of dollars per bundle.

  • My wife and I just spent two weeks at Mount Desert Campground and it is the nicest campground we have ever stayed at. The tent platform provided for easy set up of our tent and drained well in the rain. We had a beautiful view of Somes Sound from our campsite. There was a place for a campfire complete with a cooking grate. We had an electric hookup and a water hookup that came in very handy. The staff were very friendly and helpful. We also appreciated that quiet hours were enforced by staff patrolling the campground after 10PM. Overall our stay was very relaxing and enjoyable and we will definitely be back again next year.

  • This is one of our favorite campgrounds, ever! The waterfront campsites are breathtaking, the neighbors are respectful campers, and the grounds and facilities are meticulously maintained. Most sites have platforms for the tents, so set-up is easy. The staff are friendly, the bathrooms are very clean, and the drinking water delicious. Our week long stay was great!

  • This is our second time at this campground - just a quick stop this time - it is beautiful! The sites are spaced out with trees between neighbors so that there is no feeling of crowding, just of nature. We had a platform for our tent again with this trip and loved it - wish we could take the platform with us on all our camping adventures. The bathrooms are VERY clean and ours (E) seemed brand new. Can't wait to go back - great to get out of Bar Harbor (about 10 mins drive) and enjoy the island.
